April Ross

April Ross is one of only a few female beach volleyball athletes who have won medals in many Olympics. In Tokyo in the coming days she will attempt to net her third medal alongside first-time Olympian Alix Klineman. More than that though Ross will be aiming for the first Olympic gold. As she turns 39, it could be her last chance to take home the gold medal at an Olympics. Nevertheless she is confident that top honors are firmly within reach. Ross told NBC Boston that if they are at their absolute best or even a good game, she believes the team will be able to win the gold medal. Therefore, I'm hoping to have some luck also. Ross was a Californian born in Costa Mesa in 1982. Her family lived in the area with her mother, father and sibling. In addition to playing in numerous sports, Ross also attended Newport Harbor High School. The prep sports she played included indoor volleyball, as well as basketball as well as running and track. But she stood out at this level. During her high school career she played middle blocker, outside setter and hitter on the volleyball court per her college bio. Gatorade Circle Of Champions named her as the National Player in 1999. In 2000, the Orange County Athlete of the Month was also received by her due to her volleyball skills. Ross and Klineman may have started working together in 2017, but Ross was an experienced player at the beach before they joined forces. She has won numerous tournaments, including one with the legendary player of volleyball. The pair teamed with Jennifer Kessy from 2007-2013, and she also served as Klineman's trainer. Kessy was Ross's partner on the World Championships of 2009. They won a Silver Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. The Misty Maytreanor legendary team and Kerri Jennings won the gold. Ross Walsh was Walsh Jennings new partner after May-Treanor's retirement. In 2016, the duo won bronze in the Rio Olympics for beach volleyball. Ross was a player for the USC Trojans in the college years following her graduation from the high school she attended. Her time at USC was impressive. When she was a freshman at the school in 2000 she earned Pac-10 as well as NCAA All-American Freshman of Year awards and earned an All-American. The Trojans had the chance to make it to the Final Four with her help. She suffered a devastating personal loss during her sophomore year and yet she went on to repeat her place as an All-American. Over the course of her final two seasons, she took the Trojans up the mountain and clinched consecutive national championships. Individually she had cemented her place as a legend winning the 2003-2004 Honda Sports Award as the most outstanding female college volleyball player. Ross studied at USC in International Relations. Margie Ross did not get to watch her daughter's rise to beach volleyball fame. In 2001 when Ross was in her sophomore year studying at USC her mother passed away from breast cancer. But she still keeps her parent close to the heart. Margie has been an inspiration in her life and on the beach.
